Terrasense is proud to be part of the Hatta Pumped Storage Hydropower Plant project, located in the stunning Hajar Mountains, 140 km southeast of Dubai. This project is a crucial component in helping Dubai achieve its Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
The plant utilizes the existing Saad Hatta Al Awwal Dam as its lower reservoir, with the upper reservoir located approximately 150 meters higher. The two reservoirs are connected by a 1.2 km long pressure tunnel. The upper reservoir features two roller-compacted concrete dams, standing at 35 meters and 70 meters in height, respectively.
The powerhouse, equipped with two units, will generate a total net power of 250 MW over a six-hour generation cycle. Waterways feed the powerhouse through a 1,300-meter-long, 7-meter-diameter tunnel, delivering water at a flow rate of 200 m³/s.
At Terrasense, we are responsible for the precision displacement monitoring in critical structures like the Main Dam, Saddle Dam, and Powerhouse.
Key Monitoring Features:
Main Dam:
One line of pendulum monitoring across the highest cross-section of the dam.
Direct pendulums from the dam crest to the intermediate gallery and from the gallery to the bottom gallery.
Inverted pendulum anchored 15 meters below the foundation.
Geosense instruments, including manual and automatic pendulum readout units (MPR-2000 & TP-2D-2001), allow precise monitoring of any movement relative to the foundation.
Saddle Dam:
Similar pendulum monitoring system, including direct and inverted pendulums.
Equipped with Geosense manual and automatic readout units, as well as combined stainless-steel brackets for durability.
Powerhouse:
Three pendulum units for displacement monitoring, including two direct pendulums and one inverted pendulum at the bottom.
Challenges & Solutions:
The most challenging aspect of this project involved revising the existing data logger start program to enable automatic pendulum monitoring via Campbell Sci CR1000X dataloggers. This required meticulous technical adjustments and a thorough understanding of system integration.
All processes, including supply, installation, and training, were successfully completed by Geosense’s exclusive Middle East distributor, TERRASENSE.
